Stages of a course in Brightspace
Below are the stages a Brightspace course goes through. These stages determine whether you have access to a course as a student or instructor.
The different stages are:
- Future course: course is active, start date is in the future.
- The course is currently being prepared for teaching. It is not available to students, but instructors do have access.
- Open course: course is active and the start date has passed.
- Currently, classes are being taught, both students and teachers have access to the course.
- Closed course: course is active and the end date has passed.
- At this point, teaching is over, the course is no longer available for students but is still available for teachers.
- Archived course: Course has been set to inactive.
- Both students and instructors can no longer see the course. Instructors can close the course, but not archive it.
- Only key users and Functional Management still have access.
How do I recognize the stages as a student?
Users with a Learner role only have access to Open courses.

Below you can see how the stages appear in the My Courses overview:
- Upcoming courses: are gray, have a name and a start date.
- Open courses: only have a name.
- Closed courses that haven’t been pinned are grayed out, have a name, and a closed label. These courses are automatically shown at the bottom of the display list. You can view these courses using the View All Courses option.

Please check the explanation under Access to Brightspace and courses for more information about the stages
